The largest of all the pages on this site, I have still had to limit my definition of "portraits" only to those people directly and knowingly confronting the camera. There is a fear of simply asking strangers if you can take their picture, not knowing what cultural or personal boundaries may be crossed with the question. Overcoming that fear, and the disappointment at the occasional rejection, was my greatest photographic triumph the early years in Tunisia. There is a shortage of Europeans and Americans in the group; it is harder to hide behind the cloak of benign tourist curiosity as the cultures of photographer and subject converge.
