Our first trip to China was a short group tour just after relations were reestablished with the US in 1979 and included the city of Guangzhou, a commune, and the pottery factories of Fushan. The tourist bureau was anxious to show how far China had advanced in 30 years of party rule. In fact, for those who knew the scale of China's poverty and feudalism before 1949, it was a remarkable transformation.
