I have accompanied Mui on several of her many trips to teach, research and practice architecture in China. It is a difficult place to love. Life seemed hard, corruption endemic and government authoritarian. In the last three decades, with an efficiency unencumbered by democracy, a fifth of the world's population is now beginning to reap the harvests of global capitalism and industrial development. It is a change in the human condition at a scale and speed probably not seen before, and the effects have already set the course of the 21st Century.
