Pondicherry
We returned to India in 2007 to see the site of one of Mui's projects in the seaside territory of Pondicherry (renamed to the more tamil, but less cheerful, Puducherry in 2006). A former French colony, the "white town" quarter next to the sea retains much of its colonial architecture, now being restored beyond former glory by India's rising middle class. Also dominant are the grey and white buildings of the Sri Aurobindo Asharm, begun in the 1920's and one of India's best known spiritual communities. So unique is this pristine quarter that, crossing the canal that defines the landward side, one seems to enter not just the rest of the town but the rest of India. We also saw the Auroville Community and the temples of Mamallapuram in Tamil Nadu , which surrounds Pondicherry, before a 24hr train ride to Orissa State in the north.
