Thessaloniki
On the way home from Turkey in 2010 we stopped off in Thessaloniki with our traveling companions (18 years after our last visit to Greece) who would then stay the summer there. Although time was short we managed to see nearby Mt. Athos and somewhat more distant Meteora. Mt. Athos and its monasteries are on located on a "gated" peninsula - only male pilgrims may apply to visit. But daily boat tours (no closer than 200 meters) give a glimpse of the monasteries on one side of the peninsula. There is a building boom, a result of this more fervent religious age. Each monastery contains between 50 and 100 monks, yet the ever growing complexes seem like they could hold thousands.
