The Atlas Fire of 2017
On Oct. 8th, 2017 at around 10pm, the Atlas Fire began burning on Atlas Peak Road just east of Soda Canyon. Ferocious winds drove the fire across Soda Canyon and the lower part of the road was devastated, most of the homes burned, and two residents, unable to make it out in the few minutes of warning given, perished. It was one of three major fires begun in Napa and Sonoma Counties that evening. The fires would eventually consume over 245,000 acres, 8400 structures and 43 lives, the worst wildfire disaster in the state's history up to that point.
Our home at the top of Soda Canyon Road survived, but just. A portion of our deck burned. Fortunately, by the time the fire arrive to us two days after it began, the firefighters were there. For many, homes were gone within hours of the beginning of the fire.
