I had perhaps the cushiest of Peace Corps postings: I worked for the public works department in the capital, Tunis, designing government housing. I lived in the quaint hilltop village of Sidi Bou Saïd overlooking the Gulf of Tunis. My 45-minute commute each day was on the also quaint TGM line in open air wooden boxes that had probably been in service since 1908 when the french modernized the line. The village was already a tourisit attraction. Though with few overnight rooms it retained its chaacter as a real living community.
