From 1970 to 1972 I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Tunisia, North Africa. Photographically I arrived with California interests: magisterial natural landscapes, moody trees and rocks. The Tunisian landscape, dusty trees and dusty plains, held no charms, and of necessity interest was drawn to the culture and its people, magnificent subjects both visually and spiritually. Proud as I am of the photographs, however, I am somewhat ashamed at how little of that culture I came to know in two years.
