In 2005 we traveled to Peru. A country of vast natural and cultural beauties, it has been the home of the most sophisticated American civilizations for at least five millennia. The rich archeological remains, the unique character of the modern descendants of those ancient peoples, the natural allure of the the high Andes and the Amazon jungle all mean that the country is heavily visited, and our travels were conducted with a well-worn efficiency. Fortunately for us, the Peruvians seem to bear the tourist hordes with a patience and good humor that was every bit as attractive as their culture, their environment and their ruins.
