In 1977 we joined a "research expedition" to study the architecture of Korean Buddhist Monasteries. Most lie in the forested hillsides at the ends of rice covered valleys. Unlike those in China, they remained untouched by political upheaval and, unlike Japan, untouched by modern tourism. The colorful buildings were duly photographed, but the images of the monks, the pilgrims, and the rural residents in this serene environment made the trip truly special.
