Damascus vies with its neighbor Aleppo to be considered the oldest continuously inhabited city on earth. It hides its age well, unfortunately. The charming bits, the great Umayyad Mosque, the palace, the christian quarter, the renovated souks are somewhat lost in a more generic modern city fabric.
