For several years Mui and I backpacked into California's Sierra Nevada. It is a landscape of spectacular beauty, arguably the fountainhead of the world's environmental movement. Each year we endured the physical effort necessary. The reward was to be in a place completely indifferent to the age of humans. It will no doubt be as beautiful, and as indifferent, for many ice ages and global warmings after we and our summer intrusions are gone.
