Trips were made to India in 2006, 2007 and 2018. On the first we traveled to Jaipur and Jodhpur in Rajasthan, attended a Sikh Wedding in the Punjabi city of Jelandar, saw the Golden Temple in Amritsar, and ended in New Delhi. On the second we started in the south-eastern territory of Pondicherry, traveled north by train to the state of Orissa and ended in Kolkata. The third, a group tour, covered vast stretches of the country including Agra, Jodhpur, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, and the caves near Aurangabad before a return visit to Pondicherry.
India is endlessly fascinating - a photographer's paradise. Life is a public event lived out in the grubby, colorful, industrious chaos and noisy traffic of the street. Yet the intensity was not as overwhelming as anticipated (and the poverty even less so). The inner calmness and dignity apparent in people despite difficult lives (embodied for me by the serene beauty of women's saris floating through the turmoil) was, in fact, the most lasting impression of the trips.
