Coming from the pristine landscapes and villages of Portugal in the winter of 1983, Spain seemed poorer and more primative than its nominally less affluent neighbor. That impression lingered as we toured the nonetheless spectacular Andalucia. The enormous beauty of the land and its many picturesque villages served as counterpoint, perhaps like the beauty of a flamenco dancer, to the harsh life of the region - a land from which conqistadors and the inquisition could believably be born.
